Catholic Schools Week and the New Evangelization

Catholic Schools Week January 29 - February 4

The value of a Catholic education is  immeasurable, and will bring blessings to the students, the teachers, the Church and the culture for years to come.  Along with the family and the Church, Catholic Schools are on the frontline of the New Evangelization.  The Holy Father has said that Catholic Schools and Universities play an important  and intregal role in the New Evangelization.

Prayer for Catholic Schools Week

Lord Jesus, Son of God,
Thank you for the gift of Catholic education.
Day after day, week after week,
you give us many opportunities to grow and learn.
Help us respond to the gift of faith so that we may be recognized as your disciples.
Amen.

"The theme for Catholic Schools Week 2012 is “Catholic Schools: Faith. Academics. Service.” The annual observance starts the last Sunday in January and runs all week, which in 2012 is January 29 to February 5. Schools typically celebrate Catholic Schools Week with Masses, open houses and activities for students, families, parishioners and the community at large.

The theme focuses on three priorities that Catholic schools establish that make them stand out from other educational institutions. Children are taught faith – not just the basics of Christianity, but how to have a relationship with God. Academics, which in Catholic schools are held to very high standards, help each child reach his or her potential. Service, the giving of one’s time and effort to help others, is taught both as an expression of faith and good citizenship."

" Invest in Catholic Education "

"Catholic schools focus on teaching as Jesus did, as the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops proclaimed in a 1972 pastoral message.

"Catholic schools educate in this context," said the Most Rev. John C. Wester, Bishop of Salt Lake City. "Yes, students learn to read and write, and arithmetic, and all the basics, but it’s within the context of the Catholic community and the Catholic Church."

In addition to developing students’ minds, Catholic schools also nurture the spirit and the emotions, Bishop Wester said. "The whole person is formed in the Catholic schools."

The future of the New Evangelization and the life and vibrancy of the Church will depend on our youth of today.  The importantance and blessing of a Catholic education is beyond measure!

Catholic Education extends past elementary and high school.  Check out "The Newman Guide to Choosing a Catholic College".
